A recent re-award of a treknet fishing concession has made these fairly familiar scenes at Long Beach in Simon’s Town during this past summer. The fishermen work down at the northern end of the beach whenever there are fish running in False Bay.
We’re not sure how this will affect us as divers (if at all). The fishermen have had their net chased by a great white shark, but whether this means we should be careful or even stay out of the water when they’re busy I’m not sure. My gut tells me it’s a bad idea to be in the water with a net full of twitching, distressed fish.
