Hout Bay and the Sentinel

Hout Bay and the Sentinel

Hout Bay is a beautiful fishing harbour on the western side of the Cape peninsula. In summer, when the south easterly wind has cleaned up the Atlantic ocean by blowing strongly for a few days, we launch Seahorse there for boat dives to sites like the MV Aster, MV Katsu Maru, Maori, Tafelberg Reef, and the BOS 400. This picture was taken on a day when the south easter was still blowing, but had already done its good work of generating the upwelling of clean water that makes the summer visibility special on this side of the peninsula.

Chapmans Peak drive joins Hout Bay and Noordhoek, and since moving to the south peninsula it’s our preferred route to Hout Bay. There are some beautiful view points all the way along the road. Just keep an eye out for cyclists, and do not assume that they’ll follow the rules of the road.
